3 Things You Need to Know Before Renovating Your Basement

August 13, 2021

Did you know that one out of five Americans lives in a multigenerational home? It can be difficult to accommodate so many people under one roof, which is why many are quick to install home additions.

3 Things You Need to Know Before Renovating Your Basement | My Zeo

However, you may not need an addition if you have an empty basement. Whether you’re a full family or a solo homeowner, renovating a basement is a great way to bring new life to your home.

So, how can you renovate your basement without error? And is it really possible to complete it without a construction or design background?

We’re here to fill you in. Keep reading below to learn three of the most important renovation tips before you remodel your basement.

1. Evaluate the Water Situation

Before you start any large renovations, check out the dryness level in your basement. It’s wise to do a review on both dry and rainy days in order to see if there is any proper leaking or pooling of water.

To protect the foundation, walls, and flooring of your home, most home experts will advise you to waterproof your basement. You can create a moisture-free zone by adding a waterproofing membrane and investing in watertight flooring, such as the newly emerging waterproof laminate flooring.

2. Plan Around Your Appliances

Many basements are home to plumbing fixtures like water heaters or appliances like washer and dryer units. You’ll want to allow easy access to these fixtures and appliances, so it’s best not to incorporate them into your furnished plan.

These fixtures shouldn’t be barricaded in because they could act as fire hazards or trigger a ventilation issue. However, remember that they should be included in your waterproofing plan.

Much of a home’s electrical wires and water pipes are found in the basement. You’ll want easy access to these as well, so many homeowners add a drop ceiling when renovating a basement. Drop ceilings are also ideal in the event of a plumbing leak, as only a few replaceable tiles will likely get ruined.

3. Keep It Flexible

Many homeowners opt to make their furnished basement either a new living space for overnight guests or as a lounge room. However, some people come up with creative ideas, such as at-home movie theaters or bowling alleys.

While these ideas can be fun for a while, they can grow old quickly. When mapping out your design, keep in mind what you’ll use your basement for in the distant future.

If this isn’t your forever home, it’s also wise to keep the design easily modifiable. Furnished basements add to the resale value of a home, but an unusual design may ward off potential buyers.

Renovating a Basement With the Ultimate Plan

Home construction shouldn’t be taken lightly. Even the simplest projects can go awry, so it’s important to do your research before you get started. Luckily, with the tips above, you’ll have no trouble renovating a basement.
