Signs Your Parent Needs A Nursing Home

December 9, 2022

Signs Your Parent Needs A Nursing Home | My Zeo

Considering when to start looking for an aged home care services for your parents can be difficult. Many elders insist on remaining in their own homes instead of moving to a nursing home. They believe that it is the only possible way to live independently. However, it entails significant risks if you leave your parent living alone without 24-hour support from anyone when necessary. It will affect their safety, physical and mental health, and overall well-being. It is in everyone’s best interest to send your parent to nursing homes, so they can receive immediate help from the nursing assistants when you are not around. Then what signs indicate your parent is required to move to a nursing home?

  • Health issue

The older people become, the higher their health issues risk increase. They become more fragile to the development of severe illnesses. On the report of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), over 70 million American older adults whose age range is around 50 and older are most likely affected by some form of a serious medical condition. With such conditions, it will be troublesome for them to take care of themselves, especially when they are home alone. Simple routines such as taking care of their hygiene and maintaining their nutrition can be extremely challenging and stressful. It is also dangerous to leave them alone when they recently require more medical treatment. Therefore, it would be best to consider moving them to senior living, because there will always be nursing assistants who can assist them in their daily routines. It’s not just health that seniors struggle with. They might have difficulty contacting the appropriate services in the event that their heating or plumbing systems break down. If your loved one can’t contact a heating unit repair service when needed, it’s a sure sign that they’d be better off in residential care.

  • Significant loss of weight

As stated by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), more than 10 million elders are exposed to hunger, and approximately 10% of them are malnourished. It is understandable because when they have to prepare their food, it will be troublesome for them to focus on their nutrition intake. As a result, they lose a lot of weight, as they tend to eat irregularly and consume unhealthy food. When they stay in an aged care home, you don’t need to worry about your parents skipping their meals, because they will be provided by the staff as scheduled. Generally, an aged care home has a dietitian who will monitor the residents’ nutrition intake and evaluate their weight loss or weight gain.

  • Memory loss

It is natural for older people to experience slight memory loss, and it tends to get worse over time. People who suffer from this condition will potentially lose the capacity to look after themselves. They will always need someone else to watch over them, as their memory may disrupt their routines and can become a disaster if they are left alone, for example, they might forget their way home when they actually only take a quick walk in their neighbourhood or they can easily forget to turn the stove off after cooking. In this case, living in a nursing home is recommended to ensure the safety of your loved one.

Once you recognize the symptoms above from your parent, it is the right time to make the decision and move your parent to a nursing home like maranoa aged care alstonville to make sure that they will receive the assistance needed during their golden years.
