Reformatting the SD Card

English

In my zeal to use the new firmware, I got into a state where the Zeo unit was saying SD Card Error (after updating the firmware, all is well there I believe).

I've tried formatting the SD Card, but nothing seems to work.

The current set up is:

MS-DOS Formatted (FAT 16)

1 partition taking up all free space named "NO NAME"

one directory in the root named "ZEO"

Any Ideas?

(I'm going to grab an extra SD and try that later)

Hi there Kastner,

Trying a different SD Card is usually the first step in trouble shooting this sort of problem.  If you notice that the "SD Card Error" message goes away after you've used a different card, send us an email at customersupport@myzeo.com.  Likewise, if the error message appears after you try a new card, let us know.   Either myself or someone else will follow up with you for additional troubleshooting.

If all else fails, we'll send you a new SD Card, free of charge.

Hope this helps!

Using a different card seems to have fixed it!

Thank you very much :)

Might not be related, but I too had to throw out the card that came with my Zeo.

The "Zeo" labeled SD card ran unusually hot (!), and had frequent read errors.

I have a Kingston in my Zeo now, working fine.

Yesterday, when I inserted my ZEO SD Card reader in my PC USB port, I noted that my Dragon Naturally Speaking program seemed to try to analyze it (usually I don't have DNS running).  I was able to upload my 14 nights to the ZEO website.  But, when I put the SD card back in the clock, I got a SD Card Error.  Tried it several times and it would not accept the card.

Seeing the posts here, I thought I would insert the card and USB reader again, this time without DNS running.  Now, I get a message on my PC "You need to format the disk in drive J: before you can use it."  So, I'm going to try it and see if the clock will now accept it.

Format setting that defaulted is 241 MB, FAT, 4096 bytes allocation unit size, and I added ZEO as volume label.  Clicked Quick Format.

After OK, message was that Windows could not format it.  Try again without volume label and without Quick Format checked — this time, progress bar took several minutes to complete, then message pops up saying Windows was unable to complete the format.

Next, tried clicking on Restore device defaults button and running format again — allocation size changed to "Default" — same slow progress bar, taking longer, stops about quarter done.  Wait several minutes, no further progress, red LED on reader no longer flickering.  Click Cancel.  Windows responds that format could not be interrupted, format app seems stopped, close format window.

Unplug SD Card Reader, plug it back in, red LED light glows, but Windows does not recognize anything in the USB port — no format message, thinks there is no "disk" inserted.  Tried the SD card back in the clock — still SD Card Error.

Guess I'll accept your offer of a new card, unless you have something else to suggest.

Thanks.  PatCry

p.s. I hadn't done anything to the firmware.

If you go to the SD Association site:

http://www.sdcard.org/consumer.....rmatter_3/

they have the best memory card formatter.  It is able to correct strange errors, like bogus partition tables, which Windows can sometimes get hung up on.

If this program can't reformat your card back to working condition, nothing can.

From the sounds of it, your card might be hosed.  Does it run hot too?

Zeo Customer Care

Thanks, Groundloop — I'll try the format you suggest and let you know.  I don't think the card was running hot — hadn't noticed that it was.

Lauren, I just emailed my address to you — thanks for jumping in with your offer and saving me the trouble of looking for customer support.  Very nice of you!!

I tried the SD Formatter on the SD card — the Formatter recognized the card, showing the Blue icon.  But, it could not format the SD card on any of the settings — Quick, Full or Overwrite.  To each, it responded that the card was locked, but the slide switch is in the unlocked postion, so nothing I can do.

BTW, it showed the SD card size as 125 MB.
