The Zeo® Revolution Goes Mobile & Global

In 2003, when Jason, Eric and Ben (aka “JEB”) started this company, leading sleep scientists told them Zeo wasn’t possible.

Average consumers tracking all of their sleep phases, including restorative REM and Deep sleep, without using 30+ wires and sensors stuck to your skull?  No way.

We know where that story went.

Cut to today.

We just announced our second generation Zeo within the increasingly exciting consumer sleep revolution.  Ever since we introduced Zeo Personal Sleep Coach, people have asked us when they would be able to track their Zeo sleep data directly on their smartphone.  They wanted mobility, and we have never stopped hearing it since.

Wait no more, smartphone-using Zeolots.  Zeo has gone mobile, and it’s time for you to join the sleep revolution.

Check out our new Zeo Sleep Manager™ Mobile sleep management system on for use with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and select Android-based smartphones here.  Pre-orders started today and product will ship on or before October 26th of this year.

But Wait; There's More!

Sleep innovation has many faces, and there is even more news to report:

  • Zeo Commits to Sleep Management Vision.   Our amazing Zeo users tell us that improving the quality of their sleep is what this consumer revolution is all about.  It’s not just about devices; it’s about a community of support that surrounds your every sleep need.  We call it sleep management, and that‘s the trail that we intend to never stop blazing and leading.  Zeo now offers two kinds of sleep management systems: new Zeo Mobile and our ground-breaking bedside system (formerly known as Personal Sleep Coach), but see below for more examples of sleep management support on the way.
  • Inviting Zeo users to recommend to others what helps them sleep.  We think that there is incredible value in our users’ advice and experience; so much so that we've introduced two new platforms for their voices, sleep stories, tips, and advice.  Check out our new “User Stories” section in the Knowledge Center, as well as the Zeo Recommened section of our shop, to discover how people like you manage their sleep. We already have the first set of product recommendations, tried, tested, and vetted by Zeo users here; stay tuned for new kinds of apps and related products and services to help you sleep better, feel better and do more.
  • Zeo can now manage your sleep for just pennies a day.  We have asked hundreds of consumers for pricing advice these last two years and we're happy to report that prices are going down, which means more savings for you. Net result:  new Zeo mobile will be $99 and our bedside will now retail for $149.  Win.
  • London Calling:  Best Buy and Apple Europe will carry Zeo this holiday.  Wait until you see the special Zeo holiday display at any of the 1,100 Best Buys around the U.S., right around Halloween.  Or, if you plan to be in Europe this coming holiday season, visit us on the shelf at one of the 50 or so Apple stores there.  In the meantime, Zeo mobile is now available here and at www.myzeo.co.uk.

Revolutionizing innovative ways to help people to sleep is not a job; it is an honor and a privilege.   During days like today, it’s just cool to do what we do.  A little nerdy, a little geeky, but undeniably cool.

Sleep well, friends.

It would be great to have the mobile app for Europe. I am waiting to get one for my iphone here in Germany and would be interested to promote Zeo products in Germany. Would be fine to have some kind of affiliate program or an reseller in Germany.

Appreciate the insight Brian!

Can't wait to see what you come up with... the ability to stream raw data over bluetooth would be huge. Think a roomful of meditators, monitored by a laptop or (plugged in) smartphone. $99 is a sweet price point and your product is the most comfortable out there. There are also many scientists who would love to monitor EEG outside the lab. Already smartphones are being used to intermittently poll subjects (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/330/6006/932.full) think how great it'd be to pair that with EEG!

Next: more affordable, comfortable, 24hr monitoring of epilepsy in the infant ward? (Pending all sorts of approval, of course, and you might want more channels, at 256Hz or 512Hz...)

A companion app if/when live streaming becomes available on mobile would be a shared dreaming app using Brian’s Sleep Stream Online website that would enable dreamers to hook up over the internet for synchronized lucid dreaming and inter-dream communication using intentional eye movements in the dream and sensory signaling methods (incorporated into the dream) employing smart phone audio, vibration or light flashes from the camera flash that could be programmed to flash repeatedly or strobe.

Thanks so much for the reply Brian, I really appreciate it and what you're saying makes perfect sense. It's a shame bluetooth 4.0 is just barely getting started, that would definitely be a boon to saving battery using the bluetooth low energy profile. Having it be dual mode would allow legacy devices to still work too. Phone makers need to get on board with that!

This is fantastic news! I can't wait to get ahold of the mobile zeo and hook it up to my Android phone! This is the perfect solution to what I'm looking for in a sleep tracking device. Quick question, is there going to be a way to get at the raw data like the full zeo does so we can import it into a computer? Not a deal breaker by any means but it would still be very nice!

Hi Adam,

When Zeo Mobile first launches it will not yet have all the open zeo capabilities. Yet being the keyword here. We are definitely looking to implement some of these soon. We are confident we will be able to at least allow you to: save your sleepdata offline/export it on your smart phone, create an android library to allow Zeo to by synced up with other apps (hopefully iPhone to follow, but one step at a time), and through that be able to stream your sleep stages somewhat regularly (might be 30sec data transmitted every 5min instead). Since it is bluetooth, there may be the possibility (certainly not guaranteed) that you may be able to connect with other devices such as your computer.

A huge stretch would be to get the full raw data streaming. Bluetooth is a much more power hungry protocol than what we used in Zeo bedside, so we aren't sure if we can stream all the raw brainwave data without killing battery life. We also may need to modify some of the existing zeo features to make room for a custom raw data firmware. In all honesty, we just don't know yet.

Long story short: Zeo Mobile will not at first have open zeo capabilities, we are committed to giving you control over your data, and we will just have to wait and see how much we can implement given our time and hardware constraints.

Keep your eyes open and fingers crossed for these features to come out soon!

Best,
Brian

Uh.. WTF? This is great news, but I just bought a Zeo.... I guess I'm returning it now for a cheaper one.

Can I use my existing headband with the Zeo Mobile software on my IPad?

Andi@Zeo's picture

Hi Scooter,

Unfortunately, the headbands for Zeo Mobile and Zeo Bedside are different, so you won't be able to use your old headband with the new app. In order to have a smartphone act as a receiver for your sleep data, we had to completely redesign the headband, electronics and all. In effect, it looks similar to the previous headband, but it's completely different underneath the hood.  You can read more about the new headband here.

Thanks for your comment & sleep well!

-Andi@Zeo

I agree! I can see that charging would be an issue, but could I take the Zeo bedside headband to a friend's house for the night and just bring my phone?

I'm also in the "just bought a Zeo and would prefer the mobile version" category, but returning things is trickier from Canada (and besides, I'm impatient!). I'd also like to use the Zeo bedside headband with the Zeo mobile software for those nights when I'm not at home - I realize charging needs the base station, but I figure it should be okay for one night away. Is this possible? I see you've got one listed as RF technology and the other as Bluetooth, so I'm guessing no :(

Andi@Zeo's picture

Charbucks,

You hit the nail on the head: one of the reasons why the Zeo Bedside headband can't work with the new Zeo Mobile app is because the technology needed for that type of communication is different. The Zeo Bedside headband communicates to the Bedside Display via radio frequency while the Zeo mobile headband uses bluetooth. Plus, the Zeo Mobile headband processes the Zeo algorithm as well, whereas in Zeo Bedside, that information is actually processed on the Bedside Display. So, in short, the headbands look similar but they are completely different under the hood.

Thanks for your comment!

Zeo is a wonderful sleep tool. Period! I bought a Zeo over two years ago at a much higher price and thought it was a bargain then; at this price it's a steal. Thanks to all of you at Zeo for your creativity in developing this practical and extraordinarily useful monitor that has helped me improve the quality of my sleep. And, too, thanks for the helpful information that is posted on your website.

I haven't purchased the Zeo yet, but will probably get the bedside version soon. Could I use this with my hypnosis clients during sessions to be able to show them their brain wave levels at different stages and how long they were in each level? I realize that the ZEO may not use the same terminology ... we refer to Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta brain wave levels, and the ZEO probably uses other terms. But could I correlate those terms with these brain wave states? I would love to be able to show my clients the brain wave states they reached and how long they were in each state. For the regression work I do, they need to reach a Theta state, and this would be so helpful to me as well. Also, I understand that I upload my data to the web site, and I wonder how mixing my clients with my own data would work. Would there be a way to remove their data so it doesn't skew my own sleep data? Thanks a bunch ... there are a lot of other hypnosis practitioners out there who would love to know the answers to these questions.

Zeo bedside is able to support raw data acquisition (128hz) through the use of the Raw Data Library (RDL, see http://developers.myzeo.com). It would require some development skills and resources, but it's conceivable that Zeo's technology could be used for biofeedback applications. Using the standard sleep staging information probably would not be very effective for what you're looking for - the sleep stages do not directly map to particular frequency bins. If you're using the RDL, or the Data Decoder Library (DDL), you can store and access data completely off-line, thus wouldn't need to worry about mixing data. And if you need an extra account, I can make sure we set you up with that so that you're not polluting your personal data. Hope that helps!

hi,
Will the app version be available for windows mobile 7 (and the new Mango release)?

thanks, and looking forward to purchasing very soon.

Which android phones will be supported?

Andi@Zeo's picture

We're still working on the final launch list but rest assured that we'll be making sure it works on as many phones as possible :)

It's very exiting to find your www.myzeo.com website. You definitely can write and teach and inspire. Keep writing - I'll keep reading.

Andi@Zeo's picture

Thank you! We strive to reach readers like you so you're comments are much appreciated :)

Hey,
I just bought a Zeo bedside as well and am wondering whether the Zeo Mobile tracks the exact same thing? Would be hugely useful to have a more portable device...

Also, it says it works on 'select' android phones. What does that mean? I can't find anywhere what requirements the smartphone would need to fulfill?
Thanks,

Andi@Zeo's picture

Hi Brian,

Both the Zeo Mobile and Zeo Bedside do the same thing in terms of sleep tracking and algorithm, and data from both can be sucessfully integreated with your mySleep account.

However the products are not interchangable, meaning that you can't take a Zeo Bedside headband and use it with the Zeo Mobile app (and vice verse).  The reason for this is that the communications methods between headband and base station (Bedside, mobile phone) rely on different technologies, namely radio wave and bluetooth, respectively.

If you want Zeo Mobile over Zeo Bedside and are still within your 30 day money back return window, you can return your Zeo Bedside and pre-order the Zeo Moblie.

Select Android phones means that we can't gaurentee that the app will work on all Android phones.  Since there are so many Android phones it's much harder to ensure that the app will work on all of them.  Some older phones may be running 2.2.1 but the phone's hardware might not support Zeo Mobile.

Rest assured that on 10/26, we'll have a full list of all the Android -supported phones that Zeo Mobile works with - and that we intend to bring more onboard!

Cheers!

-Andi@Zeo

I just placed an order for the mobile zeo. My hope is to use it for my ""meditation" work I do that last about 35~45min. Each session. I was reading the as long as the Zoe is used for 10 min. Or longer the data is recorded. I am hoping to see how deep I managed to go during these "meditation" sessions. Would the record given me this biofeedback?
