How to get the Python Programs Running

English

I've got the firmware upgrade done.  The cable doesn't look too hard, but I'm not having any luck getting the various Python programs running.

This is my first time ever to try to run Python programs on my my MacBook Pro, so I'm a serious newbie at this.  Here's what I've done.

1.  I've installed a current version of Python for the Mac.

2.  I've clicked on the various .py scripts such as ZeoDisplayGUI.pyw and gotten the scripts to display in a window in a program called IDLE.  When I click on run module from the pull down menu, I get various errors, notably PyQt4 not found.

3.  I suppose the first thing to run would be run setup.py but I didn't have any luck with that either.

If there is any detailed documentation at SourceForge I didn't find it.

Hopefully someone can write a more detailed instructions for running the Python program(s) for people who have never done this before.

Thanks.

Brent

Hi Brent,

The documentation is located at http://zeorawdata.sourceforge.net/

Under the examples portion on that site there are some links to download dependencies (such as pyqt4).

Interesting that by default the scripts open in idle. That method should be fine though (just hitting run after opening them in idle).

Good luck,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for trying.  It's very difficult to write instructions for a Newbie when you are an expert.

I need really detailed newbie instructions.  These are fine instructions written by one expert for another expert.

Thanks,

Brent

Hm, I just finished walking another less tech savvy person through it. Hopefully he will soon post about the experience. The way I went about it with him was he tried his best to follow the sourceforge instructions and asked me specific questions each time he had an issue.

For him we did this through emails. Maybe we could do the same for you, but on this thread so that others could benefit as well. I'm happy to help, it is just difficult to tell which things are confusing when you were the one who made it in the first place.

Best,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for checking on this.  I got a local tech expert for my MacBook Pro OS-X 10.6.4 and here's what we tried.

1.  First we installed Python 2.7

2.  Then we tried to install the Numpy dependency, but it wouldn't install with 2.7 it said it needed 2.6

3.   So we went back and installed Python 2.6  That looked liked it worked and we installed Numpy and Mathplot.

3a.  We did get SIP installed

4.  Next we tried to install pyqt4 and got the following error message.

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/Users/myusername/Documents/Zeo-Programs/PyQt-mac-gpl-snapshot-4.8.2-a330e5597d05/configure.py", line 63, in <module>
    src_dir = os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__))
NameError: name '__file__' is not defined

This error message comes from Idle in Python 2.6

Thanks,

Brent

Glad to hear you are making progress.

You may want to try running python scripts from the terminal instead of from Idle. http://macapper.com/2007/03/08.....roduction/

Let me know if that changes anything.

Thanks Brian,

We had already tried to run the scripts from Mac Terminal.  It produced very similar results.

Hm, odd. I talked to someone here at Zeo and he recommends trying the stable release of pyqt4 instead of the developers snapshot: http://www.riverbankcomputing......8.1.tar.gz

See if that helps.

Good luck,

Brian

Hi Brian,
