Dymaxion Sleep Schedule Adaptation! Tips...

English

I am currently on the beginning of day two of my Dymaxion Sleep program. My naps have been going very well, no over sleeping, and I am only slightly groggy after the naps for around 10 minutes afterwards. I am not too sleepy yet, still waiting for that to really kick in.  On a scale of 1-10, I say I feel a 5, pretty regular day as if I was sleeping my normal 9 hours. I feel great. I'm a little puzzled that I'm not tired right now, its amazing that I can go from 9 hours to 2 hours and not be tired.. It feels weird! I'm hoping everyday is as easy as today!

Anyways, was hoping to get a few Tips and Tricks to adapting from experienced Polyphasers. And was also curious as when your worst days are?

A few tips that I have discovered to help a lot!

1) Sleep on chair, not bed. I wake up the second my alarm goes off as long as I am in a chair.

2) Do not eat food before napping, and eat easily digestable food. Things like fruit and veggies or fruit juice give an insane amount of energy that completely negates any negative effects from the adaption(so far).

3) Put cell phone alarm in sock while wearing the sock, this prevents you from turning it off without wakening yourself.

Those are three tips that have helped me considerably.

Sleep Schedule:

30minute nap at 6am/pm and 12am/pm.

I've read that the Dymaxion Sleep Schedule is difficult to adapt to, It would be of a lot of help if anybody who has previously adapted to Dymaxion can give some tips, but any polyphasic sleeper would be great!

If you want to follow me schedule, I update it here http://www.squidoo.com/SleepLessNow

I think that frankly Dymaxion is impossible. I've tried it and it
failed miserably. Even if it is possible I doubt anyone can pull it off
straight away, I feel it's more feasible plan to first adapt to Uberman
and then to Dymaxion. But since you've already started, why not... Go
for it. I don't want to dampen your spirits.

As for 3) I've tried much more severe ways of "hiding"
or putting away my phone, yet I've still managed to sleep through it's
alarm. That's not to say that it won't work for you, but these kind of
things didn't work for me.

The worst days are usually
between third and sixth days, but some have some tough stuff even after
that. It won't stay easy. When you've pulled through the first patch of
the dreaded zombie mode, I'd be interested to hearing more of you.

Thanks for replying back!

If my phone in sock fails, then I will have to go find new ways of hiding it :P. I keep reading of this zombie mode, looking forward to defeating it haha. Worst days 3-6, sounds cool. Today being day 2, tomarrow should start getting more difficult. So far I've been loving it. Lots and lots of time, and my 25-30minute sleep has kept me feeling completely normal.

One question, does zombie mode just hit you out of nowhere, or does it increase as time goes on?

I'll keep you updated for sure, unless I fail and then I'll go back to where I came from lol.

I wouldn't say zombie mode pops out of nowhere, but it can escalate very quickly if you don't act upon increasing tiredness. Then again, there's only so much you can do anyway. Usually it's gradual and what I consider zombie mode might just be heavy tiredness for someone else. I remember one morning where I was complete zombie and felt intense physical pain because of the tiredness. I endured through, only to oversleep the next nap. D'oh!

But just stay active and you should at least be able to minimize the zombie time. If all else fails, hit the streets and hunt for some brains...

hahaha. My energy levels are pretty constant, I'm not the kind of person who tires easy. I did oversleep today though, I made the incredibly stupid decision of napping in my bed at 6am and my noon alarm woke me up. That will be my first and my last over sleep! I can see how zombie mode can come on if you are getting tired and more tired by not acting. I notice that if I am getting tired, I will continue to get more tired if I think about it, but I can easily go do something that shifts my consciousness to something that gives me energy rather than taking it.

Sorry, I have another question if you don't mind. I overslept 6hours today, how does that effect my overall progress? I doubt that I can sleep my next 1-2 naps, but I will try.  I'm hoping this one mistake doesn't erase the last 3 days of successful napping. If it does, thats fine, I have 3 weeks to do this thing.

As far as I know, 6 hours is basically a reset. You want at least a week almost completely without mistakes in a row (and even the mistakes can't be bigger than like extra naps and some microsleeps). Having said that all the sleep-debt obviously isn't cleared. I don't know how big of a role the sleep-debt plays in the adaptation, but it's trivial compared to just sticking to your schedule. If you managed three days with dymaxion you did more than I managed with that already.

But yeah, oversleeping is frustrating as all hell. It would drive me crazy as well to think about how much I was set by back an oversleep of this-and-this lenght. Rule of thumb for those is that they all suck and even if you have only small oversleeps, if you have them like every 2-3 days you'll never going to adapt, not at least to the schedule you're trying.

I have this own theory that every oversleep you suffer makes you more and more likely to not adapt. I think it sets you back more than it clears the sleep-debt - thus making it harder while not bringing you closer to success. In a nutshell, don't oversleep!

haha well I definitely don't plan on oversleeping! I think as long as I avoid that freakin bed, I'll be fine lol. I'm pretty sure my mistakes on day 3&4 blew it for me. I'm continueing, but I'm going to treat today as day 1 again xD. So hopefully a week from now I will be adapted with NO more oversleeps!

Since I read that there's only 1 guy who could pull this off, I'm speculating that it's actually an Uberman with 20 minutes per nap, but just 4 naps in total, as opposed to the 30 that he claims (deep/oversleep mode). Perhaps he gave himself 30 minutes, but usually 20 minute of that was actual sleep?

You still going on RJM or did the sleep dep get to you?

fml.  Everytime I take my nap, I get up fine, but then I talk myself into "laying down for a minute". I can't seem to stay off my bed.

Oversleep.. Oversleep.. Oversleep.. Oh well. I will continue on, but I am thinking the next oversleep, I'm done. If I can't do it without failing again, I obviously don't have the will power I thought I did :P.

I never really get tired, I can handle that just fine.. Its just my brain tricks me!

I'll take a look at your blog.

I'll update you in a week if I am able to not oversleep, if not, I probably quit.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Only one person have ever pulled it off and even that's debatable whether he really did it or not. Even Uberman has only select few that have adapted.

I am having a bit of that staying in the bed problem myself. It's not as big a deal under Everyman and I always take precautions to limit posssible oversleeps, but it's still a bad habit.
